3. What are the different ways student learning is assessed?
I have noticed, at the beginning of the year, the district has assessments meant to determine current student knowledge. My sixth grade teachers expressed dismay of the test and they argued the test was poorly designed. It was a lengthy test and included math concepts the students had only had little exposure to. The teachers stressed to the students that the score on the test would have no effect on grades.

Alternatively, today the sixth grade math teacher administered the first assessment that would be reflected in the students’ grades. It was a surprise quiz and the teacher felt about 90% of the class should be able to pass it. The assessment included a combination of factoring numbers, and short answers. The short answers could be in the form of numbers as examples or sentences explaining concepts.
